What is a miniature Jersey?

"So, these are miniature Jerseys?"

Well, sort of, but not quite.  These cows were not bred down from the now larger Jerseys you see every day; these are heritage animals and are the original Jerseys as they were when first introduced into the United States in the mid-1800’s. Miniature Jersey Cow

The first Jerseys arrived in the United States perhaps as early as the late 1600’s.  But, it wasn't until 1850 that the first import of Registered Jerseys came to America.  It is from these animals that the current American Miniature Jersey derives.

Depending on where you live, American Miniature Jerseys may be referred to as the Barnyard Jersey, Island Jersey, Rabbit-eyed Jersey or Guinea Jersey - many names for the same cow.  For the official history of the mini Jersey, please visit the American Miniature Jersey Association website.

Not every small Jersey on the market is a foundation Jersey with genetics reaching back to the Isle of Jersey. In fact, there are relatively few foundation pure animals out there. But, with breeders like ourselves and others who are dedicated to the preservation and improvement of the breed, they will become more and more plentiful so that one day they will be an ubiquitous part of the family farm.

We hope this little history has been informative and helpful.  Also, don’t hesitate to call us with any question you may have.  We love to talk “mini-Jersey”.

Visit our "Sale Barn" section and let us know when one captures your heart.  At the end of the day, it is about the cow you fall in love with, the one that will become part of your family and will provide much pleasure as well as her milk and calves.

Fun Facts

The American Miniature Jersey is a heritage breed, descended directly from the Isle of Jersey.

The average size of the miniature Jersey cow is 36” to 42” in height and between 600-700 pounds.  Bulls weigh around 850 pounds.

They deliver 2-4 gallons of milk depending on the quality of their food and forage.

Miniature Jerseys may be polled or not, although many mini Jerseys are polled.  Personally, we love the look of the horned animals – plus the horns make great handles should we need to move a cow from one place to another.

On the Isle of Jersey, Jersey cows were many different colors – from silver to black and every color in between.

Today, the mini Jersey enjoys much more variation in color than her larger counterpart as selective breeding has not eliminated these original lovely colors.
